Do you know the average person is responsible for emitting 94 pounds of carbon dioxide everyday? Humans use carbon dioxide in many different ways. The most familiar is its use in soft drinks and beer, to make them fizzy. Carbon dioxide is released by baking powder or yeast which makes cake batter rise. Some fire extinguishers use carbon dioxide because it is denser than air. Of course the activity that gets the most attention is the burning of fossil fuels, but there are others.
Trees represent a significant source of oxygen; however, it takes four trees (which act as a natural air filter) to offset the carbon dioxide each person generates in a month. This is serious as the world population is expanding at a mind boggling rate and we have lost nearly ten billion acres of trees since 1492 (according to http://10ba.org). That is over 54%! Trees convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. That is the stuff we breathe! The stuff we need for life! Without a breathable atmosphere, humanity will not survive. As ours (atmosphere) continues to deplete oxygen and build up carbon dioxide, ill health will rise and bad climate changes will deepen. The outlook could be bleak!
What can I do with a $100 dollars to make the world a better place? I can buy 100 trees at $1.00 each at www.americanforests.org and they will plant the trees for me. Secondly, I will ask 10 friends to do the same: purchase 100 trees and ask ten friends. I want to start a domino effect which will continue until we are ten billion acres of trees stronger!

Top-level comments on this article: (6 total)I truly enjoyed reading the article about "How I could use $100 to make the world a better place". Carol Zellander showed just how far $100 can make a difference if we all just think about our environment and global warming we should be more concerned about our children's future. I will plant my tree and tell all of my friends all you need to do is plant a tree, and that can make all the difference in the world to our environment. Kudos Carolyn, your article hit the target. This information was very helpful and us all something to think about when it comes to environmental issues. Way to go Carolyn Z. Sylvia G. Birmingham, Alabama
Carolyn's article stating her plan for the utilization of $100.00 is well stated. As I know her personally, I know that she plans to organize and fulfill this mission. She is definitely the "go to lady".
Carolyn, your article is very informational and well put. We all need to be a little more aware of our environment. Even if it's a smallest effort to help our Green Planet it will be beneficial for all of us. Thank you for the inspiration !
Carolyn, as usual your information was right on point. To think our actions today could make the difference between leaving our children and our children's children with nothing more than a toxic environment would be devistating. We should all adapt a plan, if we haven't already, to make every effort possible to heal our planet and what better way to began than intoduce new life to mother earth.
Well... I thought I had a good idea about what to do with $100 but I see you had a great idea! Spreading the wealth should be, as you have shown, in limbo with spreading good health!
